Here is an interesting problem...
If someone has the name INGRAM (all caps) it doesn't always come back as an invalid username. It does the same on your (demo) server too. (That just has to be part of the username to cause it to fail.)

Hi Jim,
I have just tried to add users with names including INGRAM and SIMMS but I haven't experienced any errors. Are you sure that users doesn't exist already? By the way, which version do you have?

It does it on your demo server too. :)
I populated the database by using an export from a student management system and it made everyone uppercase. I took the exisiting databse, copied the user field into Excel, converted to lowercase, pasted back in and everything works fine now.
