I am installing FileVista for a customer who wants external users to have the ability to upload / download documents to their website. I FV on a test server but the test box does not have an existing website. Was wondering how i configure FileVista so external clients can upload and download.

I am not sure if I understood your question but you should create a website in IIS first. Then you can install FileVista to the root or a subfolder of this website.

The customer has a website already so how do I install / configure FileVista to work with the existing site?

Ok, you mean you want to integrate FileVista to an existing web site which has its own database of users. You need to set a special cookie from the existing web site and then redirect to FileVista\default.aspx. FileVista will recognize this cookie, get the external user info from the cookie and log the user in automatically without displaying the login page. Note that a user with the same name should be created in FileVista database (via administration page) beforehand.
Please see the technical details
Pass-through login.

Yes I am integrating FileVista into an existing website but it does not have its own database of users. I will build the user list with the FileVista Admin Tool after it is installed. Once this is done does the web developer just need to add the default FileVista link to the existing website? Will external users then be able to upload files? Sorry for all the questions I just don't want to break anything if possible.

Ok, this is even easier. Just install FileVista in a subfolder under your website and then add the link of FileVista to your web site.

So when I run the install it defaults to my website in the site dialog box. Do i want to change it there or leave it alone. Also is there away to change the default URL once file vista is installed?

The web site does not matter so you can leave it alone. FileVista is a web application and it will not replace your web site. You just choose "Virtual Directory" (by default it's "FileVista"), this is the subfolder that FileVista will be installed to.
Yes, you can change the URL if you move the FileVista installation to another website.
