hiding extensions of filenames

In v3.6 ALL filename extensions seem to be gone (which seems to be an added feature for v3.6). Is it possible to disable this feature via the filevista.config (so we have the behaviour as before) ?
Herman 6/8/2009 5:06 AM
Yes, this is not very good to hide all extensions.
I'd like to see file extensions.
Is this possible to enable this feature in version 3.6?
Igor 6/11/2009 12:02 AM
yes, please

How do we enable to display the extension again?

You also hide system/hidden files and folders. Question: What happens if I move or delete folders containing such items?
Chris 6/17/2009 5:14 AM
We intentionally removed the file extensions because you can already know the type of the file via the icon or the Type column.
If you want to see the full name of the file including the extension, you can wait few seconds on the file name and see the tooltip.

Regarding the other issue, most of the customers wanted to hide the hidden/system files by default.
We didn't add a setting to override the default behavior.
As this a web based file manager, we thought there is no need to display hidden and system files.

Hiding file extensions is in common a security issue. Furthermore regarding the hiding of system files or folders: So what is happening to such folders if they're part of a directy we move/copy/delete?
Chris 6/18/2009 4:03 PM
Actually, changing extensions of file names was already disabled back in v2.7 for security reasons.
With v3.6, we only excluded extensions from Name column in the file listing.

If you move/copy/delete folders containing hidden/system items, then these items will effected too as they are children of the parent folder.

Thank you for the information.
Chris 6/19/2009 12:35 AM
Understand the security issues/concerns, which is perfect. Still for "display reasons only" it would be very nice if showing/hiding file extensions in the "name" column was configurable.
Herman 6/19/2009 2:45 AM
hi theere!

Please, add the option to display the file extension.

Related feedback...

1. The File Type description for Microsoft Office documents is too long and takes up too much column "real estate".  "Microsoft Word Document" and "Microsoft Excel Worksheet" file type descriptions often force the, more important, file name to be truncated.  Would like some control over this.

2. Would like the option to display the file suffix.

I would also like the ability to see extensions.  Until there's an option to turn that on I will not be upgrading.

Hiding file extensions is the single most retarded default setting in Windows Explorer.  It's the first thing I change whenever creating a new profile on a new machine.

Why you'd want to replicate such an annoying and downright dangerous feature I have no idea!

The extension is a part of the filename, and sometimes hiding it just confuses the user!

Please at least make it configurable!
Jammin 9/2/2009 12:29 AM
I must say I'd like that option back too. It's really not very convenient the way it is now. A simple setting which let's you decide wether to show extensions or not would really be neat!
Chris 9/3/2009 2:05 AM
Thank you all for the feedback.

Let me explain why we decided to hide the extensions in the file list by default.

As you know, FileVista will prevent extension attacks, ie. you will not be able to upload a .jpg file and then rename it to a .exe or some other executable file on the server. This way, you can set the allowed extensions for uploads once and don't bother any attacker trying to upload a malicious file with a fake extension.

Note that, I myself turn off "Hide file extensions" in Windows Explorer too. This is because I need to change extensions of files sometimes. As you are not allowed to change the extension of files from within FileVista, we thought there is no reason to display them either. If a user really needs to see the full name of the file including the extension, he can just see the tooltip on the item.

However, due to the number of requests, we will include the option to turn it off in the next release shortly.

I agree with Cem,

what he should do in the in the next release is make it possible to enable-disable that function, so the users
can choose by them self which option they will use....

For me it`s much better to hide the file extensions...

I was busy looking for the switch to turn this off.  Its a bit hard to believe this is hardcoded!  I think it would be better to spend development time to remove the green "tasks" button and just right clicking for paste, copy, cut exactly like you do in explorer.  Usually Cem makes very sensible choices..  This is probably the first unpopular decision he's made; which is actually a pretty good record.  Cem thank you for all your hard work, but we're anxiously waiting for a fix!!!  Could you please send us an email with the quickest possible way to fix this issue until there's the next full release of filevista?  Maybe something simple as replacing a file?

Thanks,
MKA

Given the security concerns that Cem is concerned with.  It makes sense to at least provide a user definable (easily accessible option in the FileVista settings) to enable showing extensions.

I think Cem is currently focused on a pretty cool enhancement for filevista; which is probably why its taking a while to fix this relatively small request for extensions turning on or off.  I cant say much about what Cem is working on, but I can guarantee you guys you will love this new enhancement... making filevista much more like Windows Explorer.

With the extensions gone, I am not being able to rename files. For example, I want to rename x.doc to x.org.

I guess I can download x.doc, rename on my PC to x.org and then delete x.doc and upload x.org but it seems too much work for a simple rename capability.

It is good to hear that the extensions will be configurable in the upcoming release.

Thank you all for the feedback.

We have released v3.8 which includes the following features that was discussed in this topic:

- Added: New setting "ShowHiddenFilesAndFolders" in filevista.config for forcing to show hidden files and folders.
- Added: New setting "ShowSystemFilesAndFolders" in filevista.config for forcing to show system files and folders.
- Added: New setting "ShowFileExtensions" in filevista.config for forcing to show the extension part of the file names. When this setting is enabled, the extensions will be shown and editable in the prompt dialog boxes too.
- Added: Context menus for the folder tree. It is now possible to do all actions by right clicking a folder in the tree.
- Added: Context menus for the folder tree in the administration page.
- Improved: Context menu for container folder will be opened when right-clicked on an empty area in the file listing. When right-clicked on the text (name or other properties) of an item row in the file listing, the item will be selected and context menu for the item will be opened.
Removed "Tasks" link above the file listing as it's replaced with the context menu. These improvements are also done in the administration page.

Please see the full version history as this release includes much more enhancements along with these.

Below is the descriptions for the existing and new FileVista.config settings.
These are also noted in FileVista.config file as of v3.8.

<!--
  *** User settings and descriptions ***
  Always refresh the browser window (of FileVista) to see the effects of a setting change.

  <add key="UploadMethod" value="Flash" />
  This setting controls the upload method.
  Set value to Flash (default) for forcing the flash upload method.
  Set value to Browser for forcing the browser upload method.
  Flash upload method allows selecting multiple files at once in the file selection dialog
  where Browser upload allows you to select only one file at a time.
  You may set Browser upload method if you experience problems with Flash upload method.

  <add key="TemporaryFolder" value="~/App_Data/temporary" />
  This setting controls the location of the temporary files that are created during actions like "Download As Zip".
  The value can be set as a virtual, application relative or physical path.

  <add key="DisableFolderExpandableCheck" value="0" />
  If you are experiencing slow load times with huge folders, set value to 1.
  When building the folder tree, FileVista calculates if a folder is expandable or not (ie. if it should have a plus sign or not).
  By setting this setting to 1, you can disable this calculation and improve loading speed of huge folders.

  <add key="MaxZipFileSize" value="" />
  This setting is for limiting the size of the generated zip files on "Add to Zip" and "Download as Zip" actions.
  You may limit the zip size for saving server resources.
  If this property is not set, then there will be no size limit for the zip files.
  The value should be set in <Number> KB/MB/GB format (eg. 100 KB or 1 MB or 5 GB).

  <add key="ShowFileExtensions" value="0" />
  Set value to 1 for forcing to show the extension part of the file names.
  When this setting is enabled, the extensions will be shown and editable in the prompt dialog boxes too.

  <add key="ShowHiddenFilesAndFolders" value="0" />
  Set value to 1 for forcing to show hidden files and folders.

  <add key="ShowSystemFilesAndFolders" value="0" />
  Set value to 1 for forcing to show system files and folders.
