Install Failure

Doing an install of 4.0.0.0 licensed, but configuration always stalls at Directory permissions check saying access denied, although I have give all the relevant permissions to the app pool (iis7 win2k8 server). 

Version 3.5 works flawlessly and I have simply unzipped my backup back into place and everything is working fine.  Same iis user, same directory etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I recommend you to examine web.config of your v3.5 installation and see if there is any difference in  <authentication> and <identity> tags. Other than that make sure app pool user's permissions are inherited by App_Data folder's subfolders.

The identity and authorisation parts of the web.config are identical. Obviously the new config has a few more bits and bobs to it but essentially they are identical. 

Is there much change in the modify permissions check done by the configuration wizard between the versions because as explained earlier the app pool user appears to be configured correctly.

Strange, the check is done on  the file FileVista/App_Data/FileVista.config just like the previous versions.
Please make sure this file exists, has permissions and has a XML content.
